Sexually Transmitted Disease Prevention

Condoms are one of the most effective evidence-based tools for preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, and unintended pregnancies. When used consistently and correctly, male latex condoms have been shown to reduce the risk of HIV transmission by 85% or more during vaginal intercourse, according to studies reviewed by the World Health Organization (WHO). Additionally, condoms significantly lower the risk of transmission for other STIs, such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, and trichomoniasis, and provide some protection against genital herpes, syphilis, and human papillomavirus (HPV), particularly when the affected area is covered.
